Films

Outings to films have been arranged on a Tuesday, (usually the first) of each alternate month. Commonly we have attended the Nova Cinema, Carlton; the Kino Palace Cinema, Melbourne; or Palace Cinemas at Pentridge, Coburg. Members often stay to enjoy luncheon together to discuss the film. Films are commonly chosen by popular vote at the preceding normal Club meeting.

Palace Cinemas opened the Palace Penny Lane Cinema in Moonee Ponds in December 2023. It is likely that our Club Film Outings will include this new venue early in the New Year. There is a small car park in Young Street just past the Penny Lane Arcade on the left, and this is cheaper (or free) for up to three hours if you validate your parking ticket at the cinema.

The next film outing will be on June 11th. It will be at The Palace Cinemas, Pentridge. This site will be updated as soon as we know further details.

Our first film outing at the Palace Penny Lane Cinemas, Moonee Ponds was to see Wicked Little Letters in April. The movie starred Olivia Coleman, is described as a Comedy/ Mystery and is based on a true story. The visit was very well attended and we gathered for coffee at Brunetti’s afterward.  For more information on the film, please click the film poster on the right.

Our first film outing for 2024 was in February at the Palace Cinemas at Pentridge, Coburg. Possibly our last event at this venue. We saw the new version of The Colour Purple. For more information about this film, please click on the film poster at left. After the film we enjoyed lunch at the Lucky Little Dumplings Chinese Restaurant opposite.

Our last film outing was in October 2023 – again at the Pentridge (Palace) Cinemas, Coburg. Our group attended a screening of the newly released Martin Scorsese movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, Killers of the Flower Moon.  For more information about this film, click on the image at left.

In September, the film was About My Father, starring Robert De Niro and Sebastian Maniscalco. For more information, click on the image at right.

At the film outing in August, members attended a screening of Oppenheimer – the new highly rated movie about the story of American scientist J Hubert Oppenheimer, and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon. For more information please click on the image at left.

For the film outing in June, some attended a screening of the film Book Club: The Next Chapter, a 2023 sequel to the 2018 film. The new film again stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen. Others attended a screening of the documentary John Farnham: Finding the Voice. The film outing in  April was to a screening of the new British comedy/drama Allelujah, based on a play by Alan Bennett. The cast includes Judi Dench, Jennifer Saunders and Derek Jacobi. For more information about the film, please click the image at right.

In March, members and guests attended a screening of Living – the new film starring Bill Nighy. Click on the image at left for more details. A good group attended and most stayed on for lunch.

At the first film outing for 2023 – in February – at the Pentridge (Palace) Cinemas, Coburg, members and guests attended a screening of the new Tom Hanks movie: A Man Called Otto. For information about the film please click on the image at right.

The first film outing for 2022 was held in February at the Rapallo Cinema,  Strathmore. For information about this private cinema, please click here. Members and guests filled the 14-seat cinema. The 2021 film by Kenneth Branagh, Belfast, was screened. For information about this film, please click on the image at left.

In May 2022, the film outing was to the Pentridge (Palace) Cinema, Coburg. For information about this new cinema, please click here. Members and guests enjoyed Downton Abbey: A New Era. For information about this film click on the image at right.

In July some members attended  the the French film Lost Illusions or the new Baz Luhrmann film Elvis. For details of the films please click the images.

The September film outing was also at Palace Cinema, Coburg. The group attended a screening of Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. Nancy Stokes (Emma Thompson), a 55-year-old widow, is yearning for some adventure, human connection and some sex. For more information, please click on the image at right.
